Many websites now require you to have a login name and password to access their website. The most popular sites like Facebook, Gmail, and Myspace all require this. It’s important the password you use for these sites is secure and hard to guess, so no one can access your account without your permission.

People often use their pet’s name or something common and easy to guess for a password, mainly so they don’t forget it. However, this often leads to the account being accessed by a stranger, as it’s much easier to guess or hack these passwords. This may be simply aggravating on a hobby website, but if the password for a bank or insurance website serious damage can be done.

There are a few ways to make a password more secure, therefor making the whole account more secure. The first to use a string of letters or a nonsense word instead of a dictionary word. If you’re worried about being able to remember it, make something up that sounds like a real word, or write it down and keep it safe. Also, adding a capitalized letter or two makes it much more difficult to guess the password correctly. Even just capitalizing the first letter helps.

For further password security, mix in a few numbers. These can be added before the letters, mixed in among them, or added at the end. Even if the numbers are something easy to remember, such as your birthday, when they’re combined with a nonsense word or a random string of letters they add to the complexity, making it harder to guess or crack using software.

Finally, most websites have a security question that can be answered if the password is forgotten. Don’t make the answer to this question so easy anyone could guess it, or they might be able to access your account without knowing your password.
