Graphics tablets for computers are devices and one of the basic technology items one can utilize on their computers. These tablets can also be called drawing tablets. These devices come with a stylus. A stylus is the pen one uses to draw the images. These graphics tablets are not only used for drawing images. One can write signatures or other text onto these, as well.

When these tablets came out, they were even more basic than they are now. One of the contemporary ones was put out into the market around the year 1957. This one just did the basics; recognizing signatures, kind of like those that are seen at the cash registers when a person signs for a credit card transaction. The first ones made did not connect to computers as they do now.

Other names that people have given these tablets are digitizers, pen pads, digitizing tablets, or graphics tablets. In the beginning of the ones for computers, there was one called KoalaPad. The Apple ll was the computer that it was actually designed for.

As one point with making these graphics tablets for computers, companies began to put the different types of them into categories. Some categories are passive tablets, active tablets, optical tablets, acoustic tablets, electromagnetic tablets, and capacitive tablets.

When the text or images are drawn on the basic tablets, the images or data will be seen on the computer monitor, not on the tablets. There are ones with higher technology where a person can view anything that is drawn right on the tablets. These higher technology ones have a mini computer screen on them.

Some of the basic graphics tablets do allow a person to use them in replacement of their computer mouse. One accessory that comes with the tablets is what is called a puck. It works like a computer mouse works, only it has bit more technology for navigating. Whether it is basic technology or a higher level of technology one is looking for, these graphics tablets for computers can be quite useful. They serve many functions for each person and their computer needs.
